So You Designed An App… Now What? Guest Lecture for CMN 178: Persuasive Technologies

Rachael Kee gave an invited guest lecture for CMN 178: Persuasive Technologies at the University of California, Davis. The talk, So You Designed An App… Now What?, used Inoxity, an open-source iOS research platform for collecting behavioral, physiological, and self-report data in real-world settings, as a case study to walk students through the realities of moving from an app idea and interface prototype to a functioning, deployable mobile application. The lecture explored why the app was created, how it was developed, and the challenges involved in building research technology outside of the classroom. Students were introduced to the “hidden layers” of app development often absent from prototype-focused projects, including backend databases and cloud infrastructure (e.g., Supabase), user authentication, data storage and security, Apple HealthKit integration, App Store policies, privacy requirements, beta testing, and publishing through App Store Connect.
